I meant to post this up a while ago…like almost a year ago. Yuah and I had plans to take a tour of Nami Island but the line was ridiculously long. Instead of waiting in line for five hours we decided that it was time to check off one of my to-do’s on my to-do list. Yuah didn’t want to go as badly as I did, so it was just me on the trip down. I was hoping the bungee jump crew would let me run off the platform but due to safety issues and the fact that they were inches behind me I didn’t have much of a choicebut to fall off or jump off. I jumped off as far a I could, attempting to be Superman. It was fun. I don’t have a strong desire jump off a bridge again -unless of course the other option is waiting in line for half a day.

I’ll still fail here but at least I’ll post an example Excel file and the batch file I used to create the list of audio files names. To use the list-folder file you’ll need to upzip it and then place the list-folder.bat file in the folder that has all the audio files. Double click it and it will produce a list of all the files names in the folder. Copy and paste that into your Excel file.

No 3D for me!

I can’t watch movies in 3D anymore. I had a slight headache at the end of Tron Legacy. I saw Avatar in 3D too and that was painful. I’m only impressed by the 3D image for the first minute. Perhaps that’s how these 3D movies should work. There should be about a minute of 3D and after that, 2D.

Tetris Champ

Lil’ Princess and I had a bit of time before the movie started so we found the video game arcade. We sat down at Tetris for a little competition. Lil princess was no match for me. No, really, it was the other way around. She killed me. She beat me at every round except one and then went on to get 3rd place on the machine. What? She never told me she was a Tetris gaming pro. That’s an impressive quality. That’s one to be told, and posted on the blog.

Add one more to my Korean age!

What’s going on with the Korean studies?

Doing Anki in reverse, going from English to Korean has proved to be a little more challenging than Korean to English. I have to say its a little less fun too. I feel like I’m working my brain trying to remember the various ways that the sentence could be said in Korean. “Should I say it more politely, more formally, and should I use this verb or that verb because either one will work.” In the end I just think of two or three ways of saying it in Korean and if one of those ways is correct than I’m good.

What’s on the Anki cards these days?

한 시간만 늦게 만나도 될까요? / Is it possible to meet an hour later?
수용일 약속을 금요일로 연기해도 괜찮겠습니까? / Is it okay to postpone Wednesday’s appointment till Friday?
장마철이라 후덥지근해요. / It’s hot and humid because it’s the rainy season.

Goals

I failed at the last two goals in 2010. My only goal this year is to build or maintain my vocabulary using Anki, have fun, and read books, backs of cereal boxes, signs etc.

(And secretly) I want to learn a rap song by MC Sniper, but this might take a while. It’s even fast for Koreans.

Observations

Something that I’ve noticed lately is that I can understand more signs in the subways and on streets. For so long I’ve just ignored reading ads with big blocks of text. My brain shut off. The other day though, while waiting for the train, I surprised myself by considering a 3 day 2 night package deal at a cool looking resort.

I told the taxi driver the other day “Please drop me off at the crosswalk over there.” Before that day, I just said ”Keep going please”, about five times.

My dialog in Korean with Lil’ Princess is a tad bit lengthier. The sentences reach four words and sometimes five words when I’m adventurous. She using longer sentences with me as well. But sometimes too long and I get lost, and have to ask, “What was that?” 그것 뻘서 말했찮아!

How to Make Anki Audio Cards Tutorial

I didn’t realize how much work it would take to make this thing. But, it’s coming along. I wrote the text and tried recording a few steps. I guess that’s what’s holding it up, the recording part. Ehh. I’ll get it done.
